Review: Das Experiment (2001)

Directed by Oliver Hirschbiegel, Das Experiment is based on Philip Zimbardo’s real life Stanford prison experiment of 1971, where 20 volunteers imitate guards and prisoners, who are being observed by a team of scientists. The film stars Moritz Bleibtreu, Justus von Dohnányi, Christian Berkel, Oliver Stokowski and Andrea Sawatzki.

Das Experiment, for me, was a pretty good film, well acted and a plot that engaged me from the start. The film is billed as a Thriller movie, but it felt like a lot more Action than Thriller. The German language movie is a great insight into the role of power through the prison guard characters, with the guards exhibiting behaviour you’d come to expect if a normal member of society was given that kind of power. Gripping at times, along with some brutality, but overall, Das Experiment gave me more than I was expecting. Fans of psychological thrillers will enjoy this feature.
